Description:
Expression of Interest are invited for Analysis of Energy Efficient Cold Chains for Agriculture in Guatemala The objective of the study is to provide an in-depth analysis and diagnostic to identify gaps (e.g. strategy gaps, types of investments needed and agro-logistics inclusion) and opportunities in cold-chain infrastructure on the agricultural sector in Guatemala, including investment, technology and spatial gaps, energy savings and GHG reduction potential, and refrigerants used in the cold-chain, identifying opportunities to fill these gaps within the recently approved Responding to COVID-19: Modern and Resilient Agri-Food Value Chains projects. The analysis will further assess opportunities for reducing food losses through adopting improved, efficient cooling technologies, as well as for investment in improved cooling technologies, also based on national and regional policies related to cold chain logistics. Additionally, the study will look to establish (i) the existing cooling needs both met and unmet in selected value chains and regions of the Country, (ii) drive a quantitative analysis of existing cooling appliances, their spatial allocation, their efficiency compared to best-practice, and the energy saving potential coming from a technology change and a cost-benefit analysis, (iii) to analyze the demand for new cooling appliances including in areas with limited power supply, and (iv) to determine the capacity of the existing power distribution network and assess the need to extend and expand it, in order to be able to serve the higher cooling need. In addition, the work will undertake a targeted analysis looking at the role of the private sector in cold-chain logistics, to provide recommendations for how private capital might be mobilized to support cold-chain development in Guatemala.
